Food Adventure in Lisbon

First off breakfast was at a little cafe where we had a delicious chorizo (Iberian style) and omelette sandwich on rustic bread. 

Then after walking around the medieval cobble streets and working up an appetite our stomachs said it was time for lunch. We were walking and walking and then Bill said “how about this place?” We only had to wait five minutes for a table and then had the most delicious lunches of our lives! We had the special which was stone roasted potatoes, chickpeas,  roasted bacalhau (codfish), peppers, onions and crispy roasted garlic, all drowning in olive oil. Sounds simple enough but it was wow. We sat next to Marie, a tourist from Sweden and she shared that she had researched and sought out this restaurant, Ze Da Mouraria, as it has been listed by Condé Nast as one of the top ten places to eat in Lisbon!! What luck! By the time we left there was an hour and a half wait. 

Marie also shared that the pasteis at Pasteis de Belem were famous and the best so we immediately hopped an Uber and rode 30 minutes away in a cobble labyrinth to get some.

Then we had to hurry back to make it in time for our 5:30pm food tour which lasted four hours. Stops were at a cured meat shop that has been in business for 100 years; a Mozambiquan cafe for coconut rice, curry and samosas; another cafe for more bacalhau; and then an ancient cafe dating from the 1100’s for sardines, port wine, chorizo sausage on fire, cheese and desserts. Oy, we’ve been eating all day and it feels so right.
